SEOUL -- Russian President Vladimir Putin will kick off his first trip to North Korea in 24 years on Tuesday as he seeks to bolster the countries' ties in the face of Western sanctions over the war in Ukraine.

The visit is expected to further cement defense ties between the countries, with North Korea seeking Russian assistance on satellite technology in exchange for weapons for use in Ukraine.
