BEIJING -- China and Russia have stepped up joint military activities in the South China Sea in response to deepening cooperation in the region by Japan, the U.S. and the Philippines.

Chinese and Russian warships patrolled the South China Sea on Sunday, the People's Liberation Army Daily, the official newspaper of the Chinese military, reported Tuesday.
