SEOUL -- The South Korean government said Friday that Japan's plan to release wastewater from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant meets international standards and that the water would not have any significant effects on ecosystems off the coasts of South Korea.

The signoff from Seoul comes as Japan prepares to begin releasing the water later this summer, despite opposition from political parties and environmental groups in South Korea, China and other Asian countries.
