NIIGATA, Japan -- Nishikigoi are a breed of Japanese ornamental carp known as "swimming jewels." The popular pond fish, beloved for their vibrant colors and patterns, have spawned a thriving industry in Japan.

But the business is facing a setback after years of robust growth: Exports of nishikigoi to China, the biggest overseas market for Japanese ornamental carp, were halted in November.
