TAIPEI -- Taiwan's influential speaker of the legislature said that under his Democratic Progressive Party, it helped the island break through China-imposed international isolation.

"Through parliamentary diplomacy, Taiwan has been deepening ties with democratic partners [and others] that share similar values. We have broken China's diplomatic blockade," Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun told Nikkei Asia in an exclusive interview. But "I am worried about the opposition obstructing defense budgets in the future."
