TAIPEI -- Taiwan's former President Tsai Ing-wen will embark this week on her first trip since leaving office, heading to Europe amid an intensifying battle to shape the international narrative about the island democracy.

Tsai will depart Taiwan on Saturday and will deliver a speech at the Forum 2000 conference scheduled for Oct. 13-15 in Prague, her office said in a statement. The visit is the latest sign of tightening ties between Taiwan and the Czech Republic, and the statement drew a parallel between each side's struggle against authoritarianism.
