TAIPEI -- The debate between Joe Biden and Donald Trump last week has kicked the U.S. presidential election campaign into full swing, and thrown the president's future into doubt due to his much-maligned performance. Whatever happens, fraught ties with China and the fate of Taiwan are set to be front and center in the U.S. foreign policy conversation over the coming months.

While support for Taiwan is one of the rare issues that Democrats and Republicans agree on, how much to signal it is another matter.
