TAIPEI -- Washington's appointment of a former Biden administration China hand to run its top Taiwan agency shows the growing importance that the U.S. places on staying close to the democratic island.

Laura Rosenberger, who stepped down earlier this month as special assistant to President Joe Biden and the National Security Council's senior director for China and Taiwan, was named this week as chair of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT).
