TAIPEI -- China on Tuesday launched military exercises that it said would "close in" on Taiwan, ratcheting up tensions.

The People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theater Command said the drills would be organized across the army, navy, air and rocket forces, and would approach Taiwan from multiple directions.
