TAIPEI -- Beijing's encircling of Taiwan with large-scale military drills is a bid to normalize aggression and change the status quo by squeezing its democratic neighbor's control over its waters and airspace, analysts say.

The People's Liberation Army began live-fire military exercises in six air and maritime areas around Taiwan on Thursday in what Beijing said was retaliation for U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's controversial visit to Taipei last week.
