Chinese aircraft carrier Shandong spotted off southeast Taiwan

First appearance since April another sign of increased China military action

Maj. Gen. Sun Li-fang, a spokesman for Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, briefs the media, saying the Shandong, a Chinese aircraft carrier, passed near the island.

TAIPEI -- Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense said Monday that it had detected China's Shandong aircraft carrier sailing off the island's southeast coast in the Western Pacific.

Entering into service in 2019, the Shandong is China's first domestically developed aircraft carrier. It was the second time Taiwan's defense ministry has spotted the vessel in the western Pacific.
