TAIPEI -- A heavyweight in Taiwan's main opposition party, the Kuomintang (KMT), has proposed that Taiwan and China coexist under what he described as "separate governance" while "sharing the same sovereignty," marking a rhetorical departure for the party as it faces a chairmanship election next year.

Wang Jin-pyng, a former long-serving legislature speaker, suggested that "the two sides of the Taiwan Strait are not subordinate to each other in terms of governance but share the same undivided sovereignty" as he launched a new think tank on Sunday.
