MELBOURNE -- A general election in the small Pacific island nation of Tuvalu on Friday may decide whether it maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan, or follows fellow island country Nauru in severing ties with Taipei and recognizing Beijing.
"The new government will need to take a stance" on the Taiwan-China issue, Tuvalu Finance Minister Seve Paeniu told Reuters. "It comes down to whichever partner country is able to respond to and support achievement of Tuvalu's development priorities and aspirations."
