WASHINGTON -- There is a risk that the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza will spill over into Taiwan, former Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso warned Wednesday, and he called for political dialogue between China and Taiwan to ensure that does not happen.

Speaking at a seminar hosted by the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress at the U.S. Capitol, Aso, currently vice president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, cited the "broken window" theory in criminology -- that visible signs of disorder and misbehavior in an environment encourage further disorder and misbehavior -- to articulate his worries.
