TOKYO -- Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and U.S. President Donald Trump will agree to promote joint development of artificial intelligence and semiconductors during their summit Friday in Washington, Nikkei has learned.

The cooperation in the AI and chip fields is aimed at bolstering supply chains, with a recognition of China's growing technological capabilities. In January, Trump signed an executive order intended to maintain and strengthen the U.S. advantage in AI.
