WASHINGTON -- The U.S. State Department will establish international advisers in five American cities this summer in an effort to expand foreign policy at a local level, Nikkei Asia has learned.

Foreign service officers and civil servants in mid-to-senior stages of their careers will be assigned to mayors' offices for a year, Ambassador Nina Hachigian, the special representative for city and state diplomacy, said in an exclusive interview with Nikkei Asia.
