WASHINGTON -- U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Wednesday told China to refrain from providing military assistance to Russia, provoking a fierce pushback from Beijing.

Austin spoke with in Chinese Defense Minister Wei Fenghe over the phone, the first talks between the two nations' defense chiefs since U.S. President Joe Biden took office.
