HONG KONG -- Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee on Tuesday said CK Hutchison's sale of global ports, including two at the strategic Panama Canal, deserves "serious attention" as he apparently piled more pressure on the Li Ka-shing's family-owned conglomerate following a rebuke from China.

Weighing in on the issue for the first time, Lee said the sale requires "extensive discussions in the society," as it reflects "society's concerns over the matter." He added that the concerns deserve "serious attention" but stopped short of commenting on a series of critical commentaries by Chinese state-owned media that stirred up the controversy.
