SHANGHAI/HONG KONG -- Chinese citizens and analysts in the country on Tuesday said the absence of strong anti-China rhetoric and policies from Donald Trump on Day 1 of his presidency could signal warmer bilateral ties, although some experts cautioned that much remains to be determined.

Despite his campaign threats to impose trade tariffs as high as 60% on China, Trump made no mention of that in his inauguration speech. The only explicit reference to China was in the context of retaking control of the Panama Canal, where a unit of Hong Kong conglomerate CK Hutchison Holdings operates ports at both ends.
