BEIJING -- A prisoner exchange this week between the U.S. and China comes ahead of the return to the White House by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who threatened on the campaign trail to retaliate against countries that refuse to release unlawfully detained Americans.

China freed Americans Mark Swidan, Kai Li and John Leung, the White House announced Wednesday, after a years-long effort to secure their release.
