NEW YORK/TAIPEI -- The U.S. added 140 companies, including Chinese semiconductor-toolmaking and software firms, to a trade restriction list on Monday in one of the biggest efforts to curtail Chinese advances in the high-tech sector.

The new targets -- nearly all of which are based in China -- include Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. and Huawei-linked companies. Top Chinese chipmaking equipment firms, including Beijing Naura, ACM Research and Piotech, also were added to the list.
