TAIPEI -- Countries including the U.S., Japan and the U.K. have significantly expanded their quasi-diplomatic corps in Taiwan in recent years, according to sources, reflecting growing recognition of its importance despite Beijing's efforts to isolate Taipei.

While Taiwan has official relations with only 12 countries, none of which are major powers, it was hosting around 400 foreign diplomats and de facto diplomats in 2024, up from about 300 in 2022, according to a tabulation shown to Nikkei Asia by an official involved.
