HO CHI MINH CITY -- Vietnam has upgraded relations with its former colonizer, France, where the Southeast Asian nation's founding father, Ho Chi Minh, worked odd jobs over a century ago and sought communist support for his country's freedom.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Vietnamese President and Communist Party chief To Lam met at the Elysee Palace in Paris before announcing a so-called comprehensive strategic partnership, Vietnam's government said on Tuesday. The move coincides with the anniversary of Vietnam's victory at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu in 1954, which helped fuel other anti-colonial campaigns.
