SHANGHAI -- Beijing and Moscow should lift their close ties to an even "higher level," Chinese President Xi Jinping said Wednesday, after the Group of Seven moved to slap more sanctions on Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Xi made the comments after a meeting with visiting Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, who announced a series of new trade and investment deals with China as Moscow feels the squeeze from Western penalties over the deadly conflict.
