About 20 heads of state are expected to attend Russia's May 9 Victory Day celebrations commemorating the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany in World War II, the most since Russia's invasion of Ukraine began.

Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be using the opportunity to invite foreign leaders to Moscow in a display of unity against Western nations. Most prominent among them will be Chinese President Xi Jinping, whom Putin intends to invite as the ceremony's "guest of honor."
