TOKYO -- Shigeru Ishiba wants to take the Japan-U.S. alliance "to new heights through frank discussions with President-elect Trump," the prime minister said in a policy speech on Friday.

Ishiba delivered his speech to the lower house of parliament, where he outlined his policies after being re-appointed to lead the government on Nov. 11. His remarks on Donald Trump come after his failed attempt to meet with the next U.S. president earlier this month.
