JAKARTA -- Jakarta Gov. Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, popularly known as Ahok, was in court Tuesday for the first day of his trial on charges of blasphemy.
The trial will seek to settle a case that has sparked a wave of protests and arrests, ratcheting up political tensions in Indonesia, the world's fourth-most populous country. Observers say the trial will not only sway the Jakarta gubernatorial elections in February but are a test of the integrity of the judiciary.
