SEOUL -- The leaders of Japan and South Korea vowed on Friday to work toward new cooperation -- including on immigration procedures and evacuating citizens during emergencies -- at a summit that capped a phase of warming bilateral ties driven by their personal relationship.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida arrived in Seoul earlier in the day for a farewell meeting with President Yoon Suk Yeol. Kishida is due to step down as prime minister in early October after a new leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party is elected later this month.
