TOKYO -- The Japanese government on Friday added 161 locations to a list of areas critical to national security, including a nuclear plant and an airport for the first time.

Land use affecting such sites as Self-Defense Forces facilities and critical infrastructure, as well as border islands, is regulated under a law that took full effect in September 2022. The government initially identified 58 locations in December.
