TOKYO -- Lawmakers from both Japan's ruling coalition and the opposition are calling for tighter political financing rules following allegations that the ruling Liberal Democratic Party's largest faction failed to properly report fundraising income.

Any changes to the political funds control law "must have the understanding of the people, so we may need a debate from that perspective," said Hiroshi Moriyama, who chairs the LDP's General Council, in a news conference Tuesday.
