Japan's emperor intends to abdicate: sources

TOKYO -- Japanese Emperor Akihito has expressed a desire to end his reign during his lifetime, Imperial Household Agency sources said Wednesday, adding that the agency has been discreetly preparing and is considering making his intention public soon.

Since current law does not allow an emperor to relinquish the throne, new legislation would be required.
