TOKYO -- Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party is drawing up a proposal a month ahead of schedule to present to the government an increase in defense expenditure in view of any potential threats to Taiwan, Nikkei has learned.

At a time of growing concerns about national security, LDP wants to lead a national debate on how to respond to possible military threats in the region.
