TOKYO -- The Israel-Hamas war is likely to accelerate the world's shift to cleaner energy sources, the head of the International Energy Agency (IEA) said Monday.

"In a very short period of time, we hit geopolitical events which do have an impact on the availability and the prices of oil and natural gas," IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol told Nikkei Asia in a phone interview. "When we look at the energy world today and tomorrow, it will be very difficult to believe that oil and gas represent safe or secure energy choices for countries or consumers worldwide."
