TEL AVIV -- Israel's military operations against Hamas in the Gaza Strip will likely last for five months, the former head of the country's defense intelligence told Nikkei in an interview.

"The Israeli government set an ambitious objective for the IDF [Israel Defense Forces]: to diminish Hamas' control and governance in Gaza and dismantle its military capabilities," retired Maj. Gen. Amos Yadlin said, adding that Israel seeks to achieve this in "five months."
