NEW DELHI -- With less than six months to go before India's next general election, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party has scored decisive wins in polls in three key heartland states, denting the opposition's aspirations of mounting a strong challenge.

Five states -- northwestern Rajasthan, central Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, southern Telangana and the smaller northeastern Mizoram -- voted in state elections last month. The ballots were counted in the first four on Sunday and in Mizoram on Monday.
