North Korea marks military anniversary without nuclear or missile test

Pyongyang sticks to artillery barrage and belligerent rhetoric

SEOUL -- North Korea conducted one of its largest artillery exercises ever Tuesday to celebrate the 85th anniversary of its military, but seems to have avoided any major provocative actions like missile and nuclear tests, which had been feared.

The drill was conducted near the city of Wonsan on the North's eastern coast, according to the South Korean military. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is believed to have observed the exercise, which involved 300 to 400 artillery pieces, including field guns.
