ISLAMABAD -- The rejection of nomination papers filed for Imran Khan and almost all top leaders of his party has set the tone for Pakistan's upcoming polls, with some experts saying the country is headed for a "selection" rather than an "election."

Over the weekend, officials released the list of candidates eligible to contest the election, scheduled for Feb. 8. Khan -- a former cricket star turned populist prime minister who was ousted from power in April 2022 and jailed since August 2023 -- and most of his allies from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party were not among them.
