ISLAMABAD -- Deadly clashes have broken out near Pakistan's capital Islamabad as supporters of jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan descend on the city in their biggest show of force since a new military-backed government came to power earlier this year.

Supporters of Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) have been clashing with police in Islamabad since this afternoon. Security forces in riot gear moved to block thousands of flag-waving demonstrators from entering the city, which was put on lockdown Sunday for the second time is as many months.
