ISLAMABAD -- Pakistan's capital Islamabad and neighboring Rawalpindi were locked down Friday with major roads blocked, mobile service suspended, schools shut and public transit offline as jailed ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan called on supporters to hit the streets.

The government on Thursday evening warned it would stop at nothing to quash demonstrations as it blocked major arteries in the twin cities with freight containers. Security forces fanned out across the capital region, home to about 2.3 million, ahead of the latest in a series of demonstrations aimed at freeing the popular former leader.
