SYDNEY -- On Tuesday, as Americans cast their ballots in the U.S. presidential election, voters 13,000 kilometers away in the small Pacific island nation of Palau will also head to the polls to elect their next leader.

The race pits incumbent President Surangel Whipps Jr. against former four-term President Tommy Remengesau Jr., who is also Whipps' brother-in-law. Remengesau led Palau from 2001 to 2009 and again from 2013 to 2021.
