MELBOURNE -- The Supreme Court in Papua New Guinea ruled on Tuesday that the detention of some 850 people in an Australian-funded detention center on Manus Island was illegal.

The detainment of asylum seekers -- intercepted on journeys to Australia and taken to PNG as part of bilateral deals inked in 2012 and 2013 -- breached the country's constitution, five judges in the court ruled.
