MANILA -- After more than six years in jail, former Sen. Leila de Lima is a step closer to freedom after a Philippine court granted her bail on Monday.

De Lima was arrested in 2017 on trumped-up charges. Her first year as a senator in 2016 was marked by fierce criticism of President Rodrigo Duterte's violent campaign against illegal drugs, which led to the deaths of thousands of Filipinos.
