MANILA -- Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has withdrawn his candidacy for senator in next year's election, the election commission said on Tuesday.

The 76-year-old Duterte, who is constitutionally limited to a single six-year term as president, made a last-minute senate bid filing last month after previously announcing plans to retire from politics.
