MANILA -- With next May's presidential election fast approaching, the Philippines has stepped up the monitoring of large e-commerce companies to keep them from selling mobile transmitters that have been used to send barrages of political text messages.

The National Telecommunications Commission told Lazada E-Services Philippines, Shopee Philippines and Facebook Philippines in mid-October to stop offering these so-called text blasters. Their importation, production and sale are not permitted, the commission said.
