MANILA -- Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte took off on a charter flight from Manila on Tuesday evening after police arrested him on an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant in connection with the deaths of thousands of people during his war on drugs.

"The plane is en route to The Hague in the Netherlands, allowing the former president to face charges of crimes against humanity relating to his war against drugs," President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. told reporters Tuesday night after the plane's departure.
