Shared concern over China's military build up can take relationship to next level

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's re-election should come as a shot in the arm for Japan-India ties as the two countries try to improve their security cooperation in the face of their biggest common concern -- an increasingly assertive China.

In the absence of a credible institutional security architecture in Asia, the two strong nationalist leaders of Japan and India have recently upgraded their defense ties with an eye on Beijing's military ambitions. In September, India and Japan decided to further closely collaborate in defense production, including dual-use technologies, when their defense ministers met for the annual defense ministerial dialogue in Tokyo.
