RIYADH -- Saudi Arabia's King Salman has taken a big step toward ensuring that his son Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman ascends the throne while he is still alive.

The king has concentrated power in Mohammed bin Salman's hands. MBS, as he is popularly known, meanwhile, has embarked on a breakneck drive to reform and modernize the country. The goal, in part, is to ease the economy's heavy reliance on crude oil production.
