MACAO -- The former Portuguese colony of Macao celebrated the 25th anniversary of its handover to China on Friday under pervasive security, with President Xi Jinping and his wife, Peng Liyuan, in town to mark the occasion.

Handover day is a public holiday in the global casino capital, and all train and bus services were free. But this came with a heavy presence of uniformed and plainclothes security personnel, while the authorities appeared to tighten their muzzle on the media and sought to shush overseas dissidents.
