SINGAPORE -- Singaporeans cast votes on Saturday in the country's first general election in five years, after a heated nine-day campaign marked by the return of mass political rallies and sharp exchanges between the ruling People's Action Party and its main rival, the Workers' Party.
A total of 211 candidates are running in the election to select 97 members for the country's next parliament. Though the PAP is expected to retain control of the unicameral legislature, the result will be closely watched as Prime Minister Lawrence Wong faces his first electoral test since taking office last year.
