SEOUL -- South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol named a new defense minister Thursday, the presidential office announced, as he fights for political survival in the face of massive public condemnation and an impending impeachment vote over his botched attempt to impose martial law.

Yoon sparked political chaos on Tuesday night with the surprise declaration, South Korea's first in 44 years. The announcement led to a tense standoff at the National Assembly, as lawmakers scuffled with police and soldiers as they hurried to the main chamber to vote down the move.
